Pre-Op Nutrition Essentials: What to Eat Before Your Plastic Surgery
Pre-Op Nutrition Essentials: What to Eat Before Your Plastic Surgery
Undergoing plastic surgery is a personal and transformative journey one that deserves thoughtful preparation not only emotionally and logistically, but physically too. One of the most powerful (and often overlooked) ways to support your body before surgery is through your nutrition.
At Pop Recovery Systems, we view recovery as a process that starts well before the procedure itself. Our Recovery as a Service (RaaS™) model includes education and personalized support to help you feel strong, prepared, and confident at every stage. In this blog, we’ll walk you through general guidance on pre-op nutrition to help you understand how your food choices may play a role in your healing journey.
Why Nutrition Before Surgery Matters
Plastic surgery whether it’s for body contouring, skin removal, or another procedure places unique demands on the body. Healing, inflammation, tissue repair, and immune support all require specific nutrients and hydration.
While every individual’s needs vary, eating nourishing foods in the weeks leading up to your surgery can:
-Support your immune system
-Provide energy for healing
-Help regulate inflammation
-Reduce the risk of complications
Preparing your body through intentional (but manageable) food habits can contribute to a smoother post-op experience and help you feel more in control during the preparation phase.
General Foods That May Support Surgical Preparation
While we’re not medical providers and cannot offer personalized nutrition plans, here are some commonly recognized food groups that are known to play a role in overall health and recovery:
Protein-rich foods Protein supports tissue repair and immune strength. Many patients benefit from eating a source of protein with each meal. Some general examples include: eggs, chicken, tofu, beans, lentils, or fish.
Colorful fruits and vegetables Fruits and veggies provide vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber all of which support digestion, inflammation regulation, and cell repair. Examples include: berries, spinach, carrots, bell peppers, oranges, and broccoli.
Healthy fats Fats help your body absorb vitamins and support cell regeneration. Avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish (like salmon) are all popular choices.
Whole grains Whole grains provide energy, fiber, and important nutrients like B vitamins and magnesium. Examples include: oats, brown rice, quinoa, or whole grain bread.
Water and electrolytes Staying hydrated before surgery can help support blood pressure stability and organ function. Many people benefit from gradually increasing their water intake (unless instructed otherwise by their care team). Electrolytes from coconut water or low-sodium broths may also help, but check with your provider.
What Foods or Habits to Potentially Avoid
Your surgical team will give you clear, personalized instructions, but here are some commonly suggested habits to be mindful of in the week or two before surgery:
-Reducing or eliminating alcohol
-Cutting back on processed and high-sodium foods
-Limiting added sugars
Discussing any herbal supplements with your provider (some can affect bleeding or anesthesia)
These adjustments can help your body be in its best possible condition leading up to your procedure.
